Dade’s Battle relived
The 176th anniversary of Dade’s Battle, the event that began the Second Seminole War in 1835, will be reenacted at the Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, entering at U.S. 301 and County Road 650, in Bushnell. Gates open at 9 a.m. with the full-scale battle between soldiers and Seminoles at 2 p.m. Prior to the battle, visitors may explore military and Indian camps, visit period demonstrators and vendors, and tour a museum. Food and drink will be available. Admission is a $5 per person donation with children 6 and under admitted free. Parking is $2 per vehicle.

Bushnell Dixie Youth Baseball will be having sign ups from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kenny Dixon sports Complex at the concession stand. Registration is $65; please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate. Parents interested in coaching need to pick up a form at registration and get it back to us by January 21. If chosen each coach/ assistant coach will have to submit for a background check. If you have any questions please call Shannon at 303-0775.
We have added Dixie Boys to our league so the ages are as follows: Age 4 to 6 T-ball (age 4 will be construction league if enough to make teams); 7 to 8 mini minor; 9 to 10 minor; 11 to 12 major; 13 to 14 Dixie boys.
TUESDAY, JAN. 10
The Villages Shrine Club will hold its monthly meeting on in the Orchid room of the Hibiscus Recreation Center, located on Bailey Trail next to Cane Gardens Country Club, The Villages. The meeting will start promptly at 7 p.m. and last about one hour. Prior to the meeting there will be a potluck dinner starting at 6 p.m. The club will provide fried chicken. Those attending are asked to bring a side dish or dessert of their liking to share. All Shriners and their Ladies are cordially invited to attend. Calling all chili cooks!
The 2nd Annual Spice It Up For Hospice Chili Cookoff will be at the Kenny Dixon Sports Complex at the picnic pavilions. Tasting will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. Cash Prizes and awards will be presented to the winners. All proceeds will benefit the Lane Purcell Hospice House and support patient care. Armbands are $5 and includes a drink and a taste of all the chili, plus a vote for your favorite! There will also be a contest and prizes for the best decorated booth.
