Each year during the month of January, the Equity and Diversity Committee of Lake-Sumter State College (formerly Lake-Sumter Community College) collaborates with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Committee of Lake and Sumter counties by hosting events to engage schools, organizations, city and county agencies, religious, civic and social groups, and councils in recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday.
As in past years, Sumter County middle and high schools students are invited to participate in the Annual MLK Student Literary contests which consist of entries for: Essay, Art, Oratorical and Skit/Theatrical performances. Essay entries must not exceed 500 words. Proper grammar and correct spelling will be scored. Art Work Size –not to exceed 36” X 64.” Artworks must include a title, student’s name, teacher’s name, school, age, and grade level on a 4x6 index card and attached to the front. Oratorical - Must be delivered as a speech not to exceed 500 words. Skit/Theatrical -performances must not exceed 10 minutes. The deadline is December 6, 2012. Cash prizes will be awarded to finalists for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, place in each of the following categories: 6th – 8th grades; 9th – 12th grades.
New this year! A Reception and preliminary Awards Ceremony, for all Sumter County student participants, family members, and teachers will be held at the Lake Sumter State College, Sumterville campus, on January 11, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The final Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held on January 18, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the LSSC, Leesburg campus.
