A Bushnell man, registered as a sex offender, was arrested last week for allegedly threatening to kill his mother.
James Barronton, 33, was charged with aggravated battery. He was placed in the Sumter County Detention Center without bond.
Barronton was arrested on Wednesday, July 27, after the sheriff’s office received a call that the woman had been threatened, according to a sheriff’s office report. The victim, who was at a neighbor’s home, told deputies she and her son had an argument and he then threatened to kill her.
The woman was visibly frightened and told deputies that Barronton had been physically abusive in the past, according to the report. The last incident happened a few days earlier, on July 25, when Barronton allegedly struck her several times with a belt and belt buckle and with a closed fist, according to the report. He had also reportedly chocked her in the past.
Deputies saw a large bruise on the woman’s hip, back and waistline that was about seven inches long and three inches wide, the report states. A similar bruise was on the woman’s leg.
A witness told deputies of past acts of battery including the beating.
Barronton was apprehended and placed under arrest and taken to the county jail.
He is a registered sex offender for crimes committed in Duval County, according to the report.
