Panasoffkee couple arrested for child neglect

On January 15, 2018, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at the 3200 block of C.R. 418, Lake Panasoffkee. The complainant, a UPS delivery man, advised a child approximately two years old was unattended in the yard. The child was wearing only a dress, with no shoes or socks, in approximately 53-degree weather.

Upon their arrival, deputies attempted to make contact with the occupants at the open doorway of the residence, they were met with negative results. Deputies then entered the residence, once inside they found drug paraphernalia and suspected marijuana observed in plain view.

The occupants, identified as Ashley Rook and Thomas "TJ" Leonard, were located in the rear bedroom.  Rook and Leonard appeared to have been sleeping while the juvenile child was outside unattended. Deputies found several environmental hazards in the yard, along with marijuana and drug paraphernalia with narcotic residue that was easily accessible to the juvenile located inside the residence.

Rook and Leonard were arrested for child neglect, possession of marijuana over 20 grams and two counts of possession of drug equipment, with a $9,000 bond for each. The residence was then secured for the application of a search warrant. 

The Sumter County Sheriff's Office Special Investigations Squad served the search warrant for the above location.  During that time deputies located several items in the residence including; drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, two firearms and ammunition and new legend drugs.
