Legion lunch

American Legion Post 18 in Wildwood on Aug. 11 will host a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Post is located on S.R. 44 just east of U.S. 301. The menu includes ham, potato salad, green beans, bread, dessert and beverage for a $7.50 donation. Come enjoy good food and fellowship with the hundreds that will be there. The Post’s regular meeting is at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14. We will have free coffee and pizza plus left over dessert from the luncheon. For information, call 352-748-7009.

Volleyball summer camp set

Lady Raider Volleyball Summer Camp is slated to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 28.

Camp will take place in the South Sumter High School gym until 4 p.m., for ages 11 years and up.

The $40 registration fee includes camp, lunch and a camp T-shirt.

Campers need to wear athletic shoes, shorts and kneepads.

Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and all camp participants are required to have their forms completed and notarized with their parent/guardian signatures.

Camp begins at 9 a.m. and the schedule will include stretching, running, agility drills, fundamentals, passing, setting and hitting.

Lunch will be served at 1 a.m.

The event is sponsored by the South Sumter High School volleyball staff and players. For more information, call the school at 793-3131.

Sumter Adult Education

Interested in improving your employment potential? An entry level class in Air Conditioning, Heating, and Ventilation begins Aug. 28 in Wildwood. In one semester, learn to be an HVAC Mechanic I Helper or Installer. Public Safety Telecommunications (911 Dispatch Operator) begins Aug. 29 in Sumterville. Learn to become at Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) Class begins Sept. 11. The course includes CPR/FA. Register for all courses at the Sumterville site.

Possible scholarships sources: United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties, Mid-Florida Community Services, CareerSource Central Florida.

Sumter Adult ED is an official Pearson VUE GED Testing site. Anticipate testing dates in mid-August. Convenient location behind the Langley Medical Center co-located on the Lake Sumter State College Sumter campus.

Need help to achieve your GED? Don’t delay any longer. Come in to register for GED preparation classes and work towards that high school equivalency diploma. Day and evening classes are available at convenient locations in Sumterville and Wildwood. Registration begins July 10th at the Sumterville site.

English Literacy and Civics Education classes are being offered in Sumterville. Do you need help with English language acquisition skills? Register for evening classes and improve your language skills while also learning more about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

Career Source Central Florida is at Sumter Adult Education Center on Wednesdays from 9 – 3 p.m. Come in to job search, create your resume or apply for a scholarship.

VFW events

The VFW Post and Auxiliary meetings are the third Thursday of each month - House Committee is a 4 p.m. and the Joint Meeting is at 4:30 p.m., with the general meeting at 5 p.m.

Post activities include: Post Golf Tee Time at 8 on the second Monday of the month, Weenie Wednesday and Hump Day free pool from noon to 5 p.m., with bingo starting at 6 p.m. in the canteen.

On Thursdays it's Karaoke Jam with Derek from noon to 4 p.m.  (except day of meetings) and on Friday, it's dinner, starting at 4:30 p.m. Karaoke follows at 7 p.m.

Veterans meet

The Korean War and Korean Defense Service Veterans of Lake County Chapter 169, Inc., meets every third Saturday at the Silver Oaks Room, Saddlebrook Recreation Center, 3010 Saddlebrook Lane, The Villages. The first meeting is Sept. 16 to replace other third Saturday meetings. All veterans who ever served in Korea are urged to attend. Call (352) 748-7009 for information.

Wanting to fulfill your long-time dream? Sumter Adult Education Center will be offering several career courses this fall. 

Air Conditioning, Heating, and Ventilation (250-hour) begins Aug. 28, in Wildwood. In one semester, learn to be an HVAC Mechanic I Helper or Installer and obtain EPA 608 and OSHA certifications.

Public Safety Telecommunications (911 Dispatch Operator) begins August 29, in Sumterville. This 232-hour course prepares you for employment as an entry level dispatcher for police, fire or ambulance.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) course begins Sept, 11. This 120-hour Florida Board of Nursing-approved program will prepare you for employment as nursing assistants, nursing aides and orderlies. The course Includes CPR/FA.

Concerned about the cost? Apply for a scholarship. United Way of Lake and Sumter Counties, Mid-Florida Community Services and CareerSource Central Florida are some of the possible sources that may be able to help.

CareerSource

CareerSource Central Florida meets on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sumter Adult Education Center, 1425 C.R. 526A, Sumterville.   CareerSource is a partner of Sumter Adult Education Center, offering scholarships for vocational courses.

  Walk-In services are available every Wednesday for scholarship applications, resume writing, job search assistance, interview preparation, Employ Florida registration, access to CONNECT, CSCF Online Learning.

Pile burners course

The Florida Forest Service and UF/IFAS Extension Sumter County will be conducting a Certified Pile Burner’s Course from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the West Central Florida Agriculture Center in Bushnell (Sumter County Fairgrounds).  This course will allow a landowner to burn piles legally, safely and efficiently.  When the weather is dry, certified pile burners will receive priority for authorization to burn.  In addition, certified pile burners can burn up to two hours longer per day and get multiple authorizations.

The cost of the class is $50 and includes lunch, materials and exam.  Please register early; this class usually is to capacity by mid-August.  All attendees must pre-register by Sept. 15 in order to reserve a spot.  To register, call DarLinda Duteau of the UF/IFAS Extension Sumter County Office at 352-569-6865.

Back to school

The Phenomenal Sisters andPynk Dynasty Ent will be hosting a community back to school bash on Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. at Seaboard Park of Wildwood. 

This event is designed to assist children with school supplies such as (backpacks, writing utensils, gift cards, free haircuts and more)  we'll also have free food and live music for enjoyment as well as door prizes.
