    It’s that time of year when Sumter communities celebrate the season with holiday events. Webster is among them and has for years has livened the town with a nighttime parade that brought out hundreds – kids, families, retirees and all – to enjoy the festivities.

  • Pioneer Christmas at Dade

    “It’s a great way to start the Christmas season,” Mark Waggie, an Altamonte Springs resident said, homemade wreath in hand, outside a Dade Battlefield pavilion on Saturday. Waggie was just one of hundreds who turned out for the historic state park’s annual Christmas on the Florida Frontier.

    This is an event that park staff and an army of volunteers produce each year to provide visitors with a glimpse of how folks celebrated the holidays and lived during the state’s early years of settlement.

    Legion lunch

    American Legion Post 18 in Wildwood on Aug. 11 will host a luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Post is located on S.R. 44 just east of U.S. 301. The menu includes ham, potato salad, green beans, bread, dessert and beverage for a $7.50 donation. Come enjoy good food and fellowship with the hundreds that will be there. The Post’s regular meeting is at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14. We will have free coffee and pizza plus left over dessert from the luncheon. For information, call 352-748-7009.

  • Melon Patch planning summer theater - auditions opening

     This summer, the Melon Patch Children's Program will host the summer show, The SeussOdyssey. Parts are available for children ages 11 through 18 years.

    There is no cost for the summer production, however children will audition for parts, as in any main stage production. There are approximately 20 parts.

    The theater will accept five children interested in learning backstage or technical areas.

    Heritage Festival set

    for Baker House

    Looking for some local Wildwood history?

    This is the weekend, with the 4th Annual Baker House Heritage Festival planned for Saturday, April 29. Hosted by the Wildwood Area Historical Association, the festival is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes live demonstrations of pioneer skills, living history camps and antique cars.

    The Dade Battlefield Historic State Park hosted their annual Eggs in the Park event on Saturday, April 15, 2017.
