Join the FWC’s Dove Club Program

By Tony Young/Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission

To me, the best part about hunting is not harvesting game – but spending quality time outdoors with friends and family. One of the best ways to do that is through dove hunting, which is part of the reason why great dove hunts are in such high demand but often difficult to find.

  • Container Gardening

Join us on Thursday, June 20, 2013 at The Villages Public Library at Pinellas Plaza at 10:00 a.m. for an informative program on container gardening. Ed Rhinehart, Master Gardener with the University of Florida, Sumter County Extension Office, will share his enthusiasm about growing beautiful container gardens to add a splash of color to your home. Topics covered will be how to select containers, soil, and foliage and blooming plants.

  • Celebrate 'National Trails Day' with the FWC

June 1 is the day to get outside and celebrate  "National Trails Day" with outdoor enthusiasts across the nation.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has lots of places where people can do this, from forest trails to rivers for paddling to sites for birding and wildlife watching.

Folks can visit hundreds of forested trails on the FWC’s wildlife management areas (WMA), including the Florida National Scenic Trail, which passes through several WMAs.

But for the rest of us, I’d like to cover some things you should know regarding three hunting seasons that are just around the corner: muzzleloading gun, gray squirrel and the first phase of dove.

Pull back on a string; huntin’ season is here!

Even though you can hardly tell, summer is almost over. Kids have returned to school, football is back on TV, and hunting season’s already been going on for a month now in South Florida. Most of us have already finished our preseason scouting, and we’ve hung our tree stands along well-traveled deer trails – next to a mature oak tree that’ll soon begin dropping acorns, we hope.
