  • Prescribed burns planned

The Florida Forest Service has begun its fall and winter prescribed burning program on the Withlacoochee State Forest. “Prescribed fire is one of the most effective land management tools used on our state forest lands to prevent the outbreak and spread of wildfires, and to promote a healthy forest”, says Chuck Schneider, Forestry Operations Administrator of the Withlacoochee Forestry Center.

To me, the best part about hunting is not harvesting game – but spending quality time outdoors with friends and family. One of the best ways to do that is through dove hunting, which is one reason why great dove hunts are in such high demand but often difficult to find.

That’s why the FWC created its Special-Opportunity Dove Club Program – to offer hunters the chance of experiencing exceptional dove hunting on the state’s best public dove fields.

Well, I want to start off by letting everyone know that my girlfriend (now fiancée), Katie Hughes, got her first turkey on her quota hunt.  We enjoyed a great hunt together on public land, and I thank fellow outdoor writer Jamie Adams for sending me the slate call that helped bring two big gobblers running in on that foggy Saturday morning.

But enough reminiscing.  Time to get on with the business at hand.

  • Apply for Alligator Hunt Permits

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will begin accepting applications on May 4 for a chance to obtain highly coveted permits to participate in the statewide alligator harvest.

Applications submitted in Phase I will be entered in a random drawing to assign permits. Applications will be accepted from 10 a.m. (EDT) May 4 through 11:59 p.m. (EDT) May 17. More than 6,000 alligator harvest permits will be available.
