Class 1 landfill plans resurface

-A A +A
By Larry Clifton

A new plan to put a Class I landfill in the heart of the county has reemerged, this time hosted by the city of Bushnell.

In October, the city annexed property from the county that includes a 550-acre tract due west of the existing county landfill at 835 County Road 529.

A.C.M.S. Inc., the same company that sought a permit from the county to convert its existing Class III solid waste landfill to a Class I dumpsite, wants to build and operate the facility.

The city has scheduled a public hearing to address a proposed change in the Comprehensive Plan that would allow the business to continue with plans for the Class 1 landfill. The hearing only addresses changing the land use designation. It does not address the proposed landfill.

The public hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday, Jan.4, at 117 E. Virginia Ave. in the Bushnell City Council Chambers. See this week's Sumter County Times for the complete story
