Investigators will have to wait several days to determine whether or not human remains found behind a Bushnell home are those of Claudio Carvajal-Hernandez — a man reported missing a month ago, according to Sumter sheriff’s Lt. Jon Galvin.

They are trying to determine the identity through DNA, which can take weeks, he said.

While Carvajal-Hernandez had reportedly talked about returning to Mexico, he had not “returned to work, has not picked up his last paycheck and has not used any credit cards or debit cards and has made no financial transactions,” said Sumter sheriff’s Capt. Tony Prevatt during a press briefing last Saturday morning, noting it was unusual.

Both he and Galvin confirmed they did not have any leads when they decided to bring cadaver dogs in to search the property where he was last seen.

Investigators have interviewed family members and put out fliers and posters around the community.

Carvajal-Hernandez, 40, and his stepson had reportedly stayed behind at their Bushnell residence while the rest of their family was visiting Mexico. Carvajal-Hernandez, his wife, their stepson and daughter lived in the home. It is the same Belt Avenue residence where the remains were found in the back yard.

He was reportedly last seen by his stepson at around 4 a.m. at the Bushnell home. Carvajal-Hernandez reportedly left his home on foot, after a family argument.

He has not used his cell phone since his disappearance, Galvin said.

Investigators have since served a search warrant on the house and interior.

Galvin said it was Carvajal-Hernandez’s wife who called her husband’s brother to see if he had seen him. It was Carvajal-Hernandez’s brother who reported him missing - that was on Saturday, June 21, according to Galvin.

He said they’re reaching out to the community in this case.

They’re asking anyone with any information to contact Sumter sheriff’s Det. Troy Hampton at 352-793-2161 or Crimeline at 1-800-423-TIPS (8477).

Carvajal-Hernandez was last seen wearing black shorts and a white tank top and is described as a Hispanic Male, approximately five feet, five inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. He has short black hair, brown eyes and dark skin with a scar on his forehead.
