Human remains identified, stepson arrested

This week, investigators received confirmation that the dismembered human remains found behind a Bushnell home in July, are those of Claudio Carvajal-Hernandez. His step-son has been arrested in the murder.

According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, family members reported Carvajal-Hernandez missing on June 21. His body was found a month later when investigators served a search warrant on his Belt Avenue residence.

They received the information on Tuesday, Nov. 6 and issued an arrest warrant for his stepson, Benito Peralta Farrar, according to a sheriff’s office report.

The death was reportedly ruled a homicide by the medical examiner with the cause being listed as “homicidal violence by unknown means.”

The condition of the body required extensive laboratory testing in order to make a positive DNA match. The testing created a significant delay in the investigation.

Farrar was arrested and charged with second degree murder and abuse of a dead human body. He is being held in the Sumter County Detention Center, without bond.
