• LSSC seeking nominations for distinguished alumni

    Lake Sumter State College is seeking nominations for the 2015 Distinguished Alumni Award and LSSC Hall of Fame Awards.

    Readers are urged to nominate Lake-Sumter graduates are making a a positive impact in their community or career.

    The LSSC Foundation, Inc. is accepting nominations through July 16 and the Distinguished Alumni and LSSC Hall of Fame Awards event is set to begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Mission Inn.

  • College book lending grant

    The Lake-Sumter State College Foundation, Inc. recently received a $4,250 grant from the Dorothy Crooker Steves Charitable Trust, managed by SunTrust. The grant was donated to create a textbook lending library for students enrolled in the Baccalaureate in
    Organizational Management (BAS-OM) program. This new program which began in 2013, provides access to a baccalaureate degree that is affordable and available within Lake and Sumter counties.
    Students spend approximately $1,200 each year on books and supplies. There has been an 82-percent increase in the cost of

  • South Sumter High gets high rankings

    The Washington Post recently designated South Sumter High School as one of the nation’s most challenging high schools.
    South Sumter High School earned this prestigious designation based on the number of Advanced Placement (AP) tests given at the school each year divided by the total number of seniors who graduated.   
    A ratio of 1.0 means the school had as many tests as seniors who graduated.  South Sumter High had a ratio of 1.586 and ranked 268 in the nation.

    A lightning storm is one of the most dramatic shows of nature. You may feel like rushing outside to experience the blinding bolts, with the loud CRACKs and rumbles of surround-sound thunder following close behind.

    But don’t.

    Lightning is dangerous. Stay inside.

    Each year there are around 25 million lightning flashes in the United States. That’s a lot of chances to be a lightning victim. Although most people who are struck by lightning survive, many are badly injured, some permanently.
